A City on a Hill

How is your light shining? I’m continuing to meditate on Matthew 5:14-16. As we discussed in the last post, Jesus is the Light of the World, but in this passage we are told that we are the light of the world too. His Light is to shine through us and not be hidden.

This Faith Art page illustrates verse 14. “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Let’s take a look at the steps in this more whimsical make. Follow along with whatever coloring supplies you have. If you have stencils and stamps, use them. If not, draw your own whimsy simple sun and flowers. The rest is basically scraps of paper.

Step 1

My sky background was made with Distress Ink SpraysTumbled Glass and Broken China.

Step 2

I added my hill, torn from a piece of hymn sheet music, and covered it with Matte Gel Medium, so the paint colors wouldn’t be distorted by the old paper. Then painted both randomly and through the Tim Holtz Flourish stencil with Dylusions paints in Mashed Peas, Dirty Martini, and Desert Sand. The splatters and accented edges are Scorched Timber Distress Paint, (I’d started with the pictured watercolor pencil, but then added the paint.)

Step 3

My hill needed a few colorful flowers, to go with the soon-to-be-created colorful houses. They are Inkadinkado Funky Flowers stamped in Black Soot Archival Ink, then colored with Distress Watercolor Pencils, Villainous Potion, Wilted Violet, Picked Raspberry, Mustard Seed, and Rustic Wilderness.

Step 4

The sun and small “lights” in the sky were stenciled with Dylusions acrylic paint, Lemon Zest and Squeezed Orange, and stencils Scene Maker by Simon Hurley and Polkadot by Tim Holtz. Then I wrote “Shine” on the sun with the black Ultra-fine Sharpie.

Step 5

Time to work on the houses. They are just various sized rectangles, with matching triangle roofs, cut from random scraps of patterned paper. I sketched around the roofs and added doors and windows with an Ultra-fine Black Sharpie. Then painted the Light in the windows and doorways with the same Lemon Zest paint as above. Then put the houses together on the hill.

Step 6

Time to add my focus verse. Like on my last page, it was typed on my computer, and will be on my free download for this passage. I “painted” the words by brushing on Tumbled Glass Distress Spray, before cutting the words apart and gluing them on the page.

And the finished page with all supplies used.

How are you keeping the light of Jesus shining though you from being hidden?
