Creating Creative Habits

Creativity is soul care that is both effective and enjoyable for the brain healing from trauma.

But to be effective, it needs to be practiced. And nothing helps practice more than making it a habit. And nothing creates habits better than doing it daily. Yes, I know what you’re saying, but stick with me.

Pockets Folio with Flaps—Tutorial coming soon!

What creative soul care have you been doing recently? Most of my creations this past few weeks have continued to be envelopes, pockets and folios, with some Bible Journaling and tags and cards and jewelry making, and … and, here and there. Ok, I admit it, I’ve been all over the place. But still, most has been pockets/folios/envelopes of some type. — Stick with me through the next bits, I’ll get to the topic here in a couple of paragraphs. 😁

What I’ve not been so prolific in is getting them posted, nor videos made. Oh well, that will come in time. Did I ever tell you that “Oh well” has become a new response for me over the past 5+ years? After a lifetime of over-functioning, and burning myself out trying to do everything for everyone, I finally got to the point where I said, No more, I can’t do it. “That won’t be done when either you or I want it to be. Oh well. I can’t. I can only do what I can do.” But again, I’m all over the place. Attention and focus was never a problem before 6-7 years ago either, but now? Oh well!

Anyhow, actually my desire (and goal) is to put a wide variety of techniques for each creative category together into Courses. They will come. And you will enjoy them! If you’ve followed me for a long time, yeah I’ve been around a LONG time, here and there, you know that course creation is my mojo. It just takes me longer these days. So, when time is short, and life is so full of everything else, sharing-time comes behind soul-care-creative-time.

Soul care creative time is a must though!

7 (or 8) Pocket Tri-fold—Tutorial coming soon!

I’ve been mindful of #The100DayProject, but I have no idea what day it is officially on. Nor do I know how many days I’ve completed. Nor am I limiting myself to one project throughout, I’m not in a place where I need a “challenge” to put added pressure or “need to do” on my plate. (Or I’ll be back into “Oh well!”) But the principle of doing doing something creative everyday, even if only 10-15 minutes, or even 5!, is a great principle to embrace. It’s about creating a habit of taking even just a few minutes each day to be creative, to engage in much needed soul care.

The 100 Day Project is about choosing one project, and working on it for 100 days. It isn’t about completing a project daily. It doesn’t even need to look like anything for a while. You can work on the same project, page, envelope, whatever for many days. Even for 100 days or more.

Perhaps you just cut your papers one day, fold the next, glue the next… Perhaps you crochet or knit one row a day—or 20 stitches. Or you cut one quilt square a day, then sew one a day. Perhaps you write a sentence—or a word, each day. It doesn’t have to be a whole book, poem, or even complete blog post. {I’ve got this!}

In my world, it doesn’t even have to be a single project. Just developing the habit of spending some time, every day, decompressing and making something.

Whatever your creative process, stop and smell the roses. Neither Creativity nor Soul Care are a race. Especially, creativity and soul care should not be a race. They are meant to be our needed reprieve from the “rat race” of life, the pressures, the stresses, the trauma. (Thus why, when creative soul care becomes a business or even sometimes for necessary others/gifts, it loses its ability to be soul care.)

Creative Soul Care is for your calm, your healing. Your Joy! And that’s a great habit to build.

So go make Beauty from Ashes! Every day. And enJOY!
