It's not a sin to be disappointed.Your kids get disappointed when they hope they can go to the park but it rains. I hope you'd have empathy for their disappoinment.
And maybe this Mother's Day, you feel disappointed. Perhaps you hoped someone would express gratitude for your labor of love but it didn't come. Maybe you are struggling with complicated emotions revolving around children you couldn't have, children you've lost or been estranged from, or disappointment that your loving mother is gone or that you never experienced healthy love from your mother. I hope you can have empathy for your own disappointment too.
I'm seeing a lot of posts telling moms that if they're disappointed on mother's day, that they need to meditate on verses about being selfish or about being envious of others.
The idea that you can choose not to feel disappointed by telling yourself you're being selfish is called spiritual bypassing. That's when spiritual sounding language is used to dismiss legitimate emotions.
Just as I will never tell my kids that they're being selfish or to quit being envious of the kids in a non-rainy location who got to go the park, I will never tell you to shoo away your disappointment when mother's day doesn't look like you'd hope it to.
Let me be clear, if you throw a fit and chew your family out because they didn't make mother's day special for you - yes, that's a problem. But if you FEEL disappointed, it's not a sin; it's human.
While I will always encourage you to take those feelings to Jesus, I will never tell you to convince yourself you're being selfish for having them.
Jesus cares about every tear that trickles down your cheek, and he collects them all in a bottle (Psalm 56:8). Your difficult emotions matter to him.
Feelings are not an indicator of your spiritual state;they're an indicator that you're a normally functioning human.
Be free, sister. Feel the things that God created your amazingly complex body to feel, and don't chalk them up to a spiritual shortcoming on your part.
God bless your aching heart and give you peace in knowing that he looks on your ache with compassion and not with judgment
