Dry Bones

When YHWH set Ezekiel down in the valley full of very dry bones, The Spirit asked him, “Son of man, can these bones live?” Ezekiel replied, “Lord YHWH, only you know.” Dry bones, hear the word of YHWH, “I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live.”

The Encounters in Colour Christian art journaling retreat session by Jen Alward focused on this passage, in Ezekiel 37. As I meditated on it and how I wanted to make my faith art page for it, I remembered a time several years ago when I was walking through a valley of the shadow of death. A time when I was so dry and dead inside. Even though my relationship with God didn’t waiver, I truly was crying out to Him, “Will I ever live again?” I was experiencing only the deepness and darkness of the dry valley surrounding me, and saw no light or way out from the evil surrounding me.

A wise counselor, who had known me for decades, told me, “You know God is with you in this valley of the shadow of death, even though you can’t see anything in this darkness or even feel His presence the way you are used to. You know His light will shine through again at the end and He will lead you out.” As God told Ezekiel to prophesy, His Spirit spoke to mine, “I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live.”

God, of course, indeed did lead me not only through that valley and back into His glorious light, but He also breathed fresh life into me again. That valley experience, and now being completely on the other side of it, shaped the design of my faith art page.

The valley was formed with print outs from the instructor, that I colored with Distress Watercolor Pencils and pieced together. The dry bones were part of that print out also.

Black acrylic paint was needed to get the deep opaque darkness that surrounded. But God’s Light shines through, colored with Distress Watercolor Pencils.

I had planned to put my own picture in the light, but chose to use a print out silhouette from last year’s Encounters in Colour, that I fell in love with then. I also added both the Ezekiel and the Psalm 23 verses, since they were both instrumental in this experience.

God is faithful and true to His Word and to us. You will breathe and live again!

We’d love to see your faith art on these passages, in our Creative Community on FB.
