Last & First

🥳 Happy New Year! 🥳

The last shall be first. Meaning, my last make of 2025 also became my first make of 2026.

I had decided the theme for my NYE art project a week ago, choosing Comfort & Joy. I even designed a couple images for my focal point. But when I sat down last night to create, it just wasn’t coming.

So I started with some neurographic drawing, which is always a good art (and brain) exercise when you’re not sure what direction you want to go. But it wasn’t what I had envisioned! After rounding and coloring, my mixed media mojo was kicking in, so I added some stamping and stenciling over it.

It’s my party; I’ll create if I want to.

And then… I chose to add a large Rose as a focal point. What? That isn’t what my focal point was to be at all! I didn’t have a large rose die, so had to cut what I could find in Cricut. It was about 11:45 at that point, so time to cue up Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture for the New Year Countdown.

Side note: If you start Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture at 11:47:55 on NYE, the first cannon blast will happen at exactly midnight.

I learned this a couple years ago and had to check it out for myself. Yep! So I decided it had to become a NYE tradition, (better than some lame ball drop in NYC,) but I time it for the Finale cannons at about 14 minutes in, instead of 12 minutes for the first cannons.

Just in case you think you don’t know The 1812 Overture, listen to about the last 1-3 minutes plus, and I’m sure you’ll recognize it.

And to build your music history knowledge, The 1812 Overture was written by Russian composer, Tchaikovsky in 1880, to commemorate the success at keeping Napoleon from taking over Russia in 1812. Tchaikovsky’s composition included real cannons, and the overture was 15 minutes long. It’s usually performed including fireworks also.

After our countdown, toast, poppers, and fireworks, I came back to finish my creation—now in the New Year. I ink sprayed and put together the flower, splattered the page, and added the words in black Sharpie. To make them stand out better, I outlined them with white gel pen. I don’t love that! But too late now.

There isn’t a specific scripture verse that talks of Comfort & Joy together, but we know that Holy Spirit is our Comforter and part of His fruit in our lives is Joy! The verse I chose is Romans 15:4. “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.”

Through the comfort of the scriptures we have hope! And it’s Hope that brings Joy, even through the hard things of life—God’s fruit remains in our lives. It isn’t because we conjure something up. It’s something He comforts us with and works in our lives.

So may you have Comfort & Joy as the Holy Spirit works in your life this year. đź©·
