Full Deck. Dex?

I really enjoy making Altered Playing Cards! Their small size is the perfect mini canvas for our Art Journaling. Especially for making quick projects!

I’ve heard of “Full Deck” before, completing art projects on a full deck of 52 playing cards, and of course it lines up perfectly with our 52 weeks in a year. I’ve always made Altered Playing Cards true junk journal style, using cards from partial decks found lying around my house. But thought this might be a good “year long” project—quick and easy, to keep the mojo up. (But I don’t hold myself to making 1 a week for 52 strait weeks.)

So I began coming up with a list of prompts. Part of this was based on the 12 Words I’d used on canvases I’d made for Christmas gifts. I wanted to carry those ideas over onto makes for myself. But I also decided I wanted to include other prompts, for truly being able to do these as quick makes, not taking time to try to think of some stellar inspiration.

I started writing, for various categories for prompts, and thinking of various ways I could use them. Color. Paper. Nature. Objects. Embellishments. I thought I could choose from one different category each week of each month. I stopped writing ideas at 12 Words. 12 Colors. 12 Papers. 12 items in Nature. 12 Objects. 12 Embellishments.

I decided not to include techniques in these “prompts” lists, but rather to just use techniques I enjoy doing, with the types of supplies I have and enjoy working with. I can make a different list of those.

Then started thinking, I really liked doing a Names of God Altered Playing Cards set I’d made last year, and would like to expand it. And I had another set of Tags I’d made with other Inspirational Words, I’d like to include. I kept rolling out the ideas.

I had 12 Names of God, I kept going for 2 more sets of 12 Names of Jesus, specifically. So 12 Names of God + 24 Names of Jesus. And I stopped those Inspirational Words at 52. One for each week!

Yeah, it was time to stop! No it wasn’t! I decided to add one more in each category, to make it a Baker ‘s Dozen each! Enough to fill a full quarter of the year, and then reuse in different ways, 3 more times.

This was way more than I’d probably actually use. And more categories than could fit on a playing card. But it gives me plenty of options to choose from! And that’s what I like—options. But in a somewhat organized way, to keep my brain from being overwhelmed.

Then I got to thinking again,—yes, this brain never turns off—I’d really like to do more Dex Cards, so I can display them better. I haven’t made as many of those as I’d like. Maybe I’ll even put a playing card on each dex card! …

If you’d like some inspiration and prompts for making an Altered “Full Deck” of Playing Cards, or Dex Cards, or Art Journaling in an actual Journal, or whatever your fancy is—for 52 weeks or just whenever, Here are 2 sheets of prompts for you. These prompts are only for inspiration, no rules. Choose from one category, 2 categories, or more. Your choice. Do one make a week, or whenever. It’s all your choice!

I’ll be sharing some of my makes with these prompts throughout the year. Who knows if they’ll be on playing cards, dex cards, or what?

After working on my prompts list, I came across a video by Shana at ShanoukiArt, on the Full Deck Challenge she is doing. She may well be where I ran across this in a previous year. I don’t remember, as I didn’t actually do it then. Check it out.
