Today we’re looking at John 15:11, and all the rich context surrounding it, and the Faith Art journaling of my study of it. {Video below.}

This section of God’s Word is so rich, deep, and exciting! And Jesus’ disciples just weren’t getting it. Even looking back on it, many times we don’t either. To study this verse, we need to go back and begin reading at John chapter 13, as that is where Jesus starts this discourse—and it continues through chapter 16/17. Judas had just left the Passover meal, to betray Jesus, and Jesus is giving the rest of His disciples some parting words—explanation, instruction, and comfort. Words that they just weren’t fully getting.
In John 15:11 Jesus states, “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete…” To know what things He has told them, we have to start at chapter 13. And to fully understand this Joy He’s talking about, we have to continue reading through chapter 16, where He explains that their deep anguish and sorrow at the coming events will be turned to Joy. That He is the Victor!

Video
The video for this Bible Study + Faith Art is a part of #faithjournaljuly2025 a video hop created by Debbie at Pouring My Art Out for the Lord and Diane at Faithart Design Studio. It’s different than most of my creative tutorial videos, as it’s a combo of my Bible Study process, what we see in this passage and the process of my mixed media journal page I created about it.
The video goes Live today (7/7/25) at 11am central time, as a Premiere. That means if you join us then, you can participate in a Live Chat with me and other viewers. I’ve not done a Premiere before, but I think the link here should go live at that time too, but you’ll have to click over to YouTube to participate in the Live Chat. You’ll be able to watch the video here after the Live Premiere is over. Want to leave a comment on the video (or Subscribe to my YouTube channel? Click it to go to YouTube to do so.
The Rest of the Story
This last part of the study, through chapter 16 is not included in the video. I regret I didn’t add it there. But I don’t want you to miss it. So I’m including the important conclusion of that part here.
In chapter 16, Jesus tells His disciples why He’s telling them these things. “I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling,” so they will remember “these things” when the time comes. Because though you “have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you.” “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
This is the complete full joy He’s talking about in John 15:11. Though we have sorrow and suffering in this world, He has conquered the world! So our hearts rejoice, and no one can take that Joy from us!
