I recently came across a reel with the words in this image. Strong truths about life. That brought strong pondering in my soul.

In my education in trauma healing, I was often “surprised”/not surprised to learn how many of the healing/regulating “techniques” are things that are done naturally—and have been throughout time. Things we did automatically, even as children, to “self-soothe”. Things mom and grandma and loving, caring others did naturally—without any training or therapeutic language for it—to help those around them when in times of trouble, that are now seen as “co-regulation”. Calming, “nervous system regulating,” activities that kept the hard trials of life bearable.
“There is nothing new under the sun.”
Ecclesiastes 1:9
But it shouldn’t take trauma and everything breaking down for us to see our need for calming rhythms of life—and doing something about it. In the busyness of everyday life, many may give lip service to needing to slow down, but in general, most people’s response to lists like this is, “Who has time for that?” Not recognizing the necessity of things like this, to be able to actually continue to live—and to enjoy our lives. Thinking they’ll slow down when they’re “old” and have nothing else to do. Not realizing that if they don’t make some time for the slow, the calm, now, they may not make it to “old.”
The truth revealed in these words are “Slow down and enjoy life now, or you won’t have a life you can enjoy later.” Or in words of old, “Stop and smell the roses!” Hmm, science has proven the healing benefits of that very natural thing to do, too.
In a world where—Handwork gave way to cheap imported machine work. Sitting still without “productivity” gave way to schedules coordinated by the minute. Natural light and nature itself gave way to gyms without windows and late nights on screens. Real, whole, fresh made foods gave way to fast food drive through. Community and shared ritual gave way to social media, gaming alone, and AI advice —no wonder our regulatory systems are so out of whack.
If you look at the things listed here and similar, and dismiss them as “Old fashioned.” “For old people with nothing better to do.” Things you “can’t ‘take time’ to do.” Perhaps you need to rethink how those old people “got old” and continued to keep their nervous systems regulated—or in their words, calm and relaxed, in a time when their work didn’t have all the labor saving conveniences ours does.
I believe those that “stop and smell the roses”, those that engage in the relaxing rhythms of life, such as those listed here, have chosen the better part, that will benefit their lives—physically, mentally and emotionally.
