VDay or DDay?

Valentine’s Day seems to be not just a love holiday, but also one hated my many. For the haters it may be D(itch the) Day. Whether it’s because one doesn’t have a romantic loved one, or has been left and hurt by someone who was supposed to love them, or because they think it’s just commercialism, pushing for purchases of flowers, chocolate, jewelry and dinner out.

It may be the disappointment in not receiving things like that, not feeling loved. It may be feeling pressured to give specific things on a specific day, and think everyday should be love day, so there shouldn’t be a special one. But I tend to find that the ones who don’t want to do these special things to bless their loved one on Feb 14th, don’t do them throughout the year either.

Regardless, even though I don’t have a special love—outside of my kids and grands, I love Valentine’s Day! I can bless my children and grands. And I love Galentine’s Day—I can bless my friends. And my Jesus loves me—and blesses me—every day! So I can love me and bless me, too. I can buy the flowers, chocolate, dinner, and even jewelry—if I want. Or maybe creative supplies instead. 😉

This post is more about the latter. Not buying supplies, but beautifying my life and home in love, creating for the special occasion. I love decorating for the holidays, even ones that come and go so quickly. Valentine’s day is nestled tightly in between Christmas decor and Spring/Resurrection Day decor. But I still like to move out of the cold winter feeling before I’m anywhere close to feeling Spring-y.

My hand quilted table runner, that I made long ago, is showing its stains and wear, so I changed things up a bit this year. An antique linen tablecloth paired with a new homespun one—and a few vintage napkins.

I wanted to create my own wall hangings, and went into this project knowing 2 things. I wanted to get back to my roots with some primitive style and hand sewing, and I wanted to use wood heart ornaments in some way.

The hand sewn/quilted (and further decorated) hearts were put on an antique cigar box, that was too far damaged to use for storage. But first I white washed the box and decoupaged on a burnt hymn page—The Love of God, a favorite! ❤️ The bows, jute, and texture paste through a stencil added finishing touches.

My next project was my wooden hearts. Paint, collage—music and napkin, stamping and heat embossing, splatters, ribbon, and bows made them just what I’d envisioned. But how to display them? I wasn’t sure. Until when I came home later that day and saw the perfect stick in the yard.

I have one final piece I’m working on. Which actually was the start of all of this. But it isn’t finished yet. I’m still mulling and slowly adding layers. It’s more aligned with my current mixed media style.

Last year I made this Faith Dex card, that is displayed in my Creative Studio on my Rolodex, for this season. It is my inspiration for the much larger, and different, wall piece I’m working on.

I’d planned to hold off on this post until I finished and hung the new piece, but since that may not happen before Saturday…

I’m posting this now, wishing you a very happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️ —whether you’re resting in just The Love of God, loving yourself, loving your kids and friends, or have a special someone. Add a little love to your heart and your home❣️
