Redeeming Layers

Do you have the same problem that I often do? (Thankfully, this isn’t that—artistically anyhow. But read on.) Problem. The idea in your head doesn’t transfer into your journal, like you want. Your picture isn’t painting 1000 words, and you feel like it’s going to take 1000 words just to explain what you’re trying to convey through artistic expression.

That background that looked so great in your imagination is just plain ugly on the canvas. Do you trash it? Keep trying? Give up and let it be what it is? And we won’t even talk about main focal image.

In my last post I talked a bit about redeeming layers. This one has an element of the same, but a much quicker and happier ending.

The good thing about working in an art journal vs making a professional commissioned piece is that it can be for your eyes only. No one else has to interpret it. You know what you were thinking, feeling, meditating on. And—we can always keep going back later and tweaking it if we want.

But still, we rejoice when a plan comes together!

I’m still working in my Names of God journal. ✝️ These are the backgrounds of what’s up next. But I had to share a pic of them before I added the defining elements. Because both turned out how I wanted (which doesn’t always happen.)

The colorful one was already a background—that wasn’t what I wanted, but had the same basic colors, so I hoped I could transform it. I had my doubts. But I’m so happy, it didn’t take much, and I love it. ❤️

I could use this for so many things. If only I could replicate it. 😄

Isn’t this also so true of our spiritual walk and growth? We want to walk in faith and obedience, we see it. But things don’t always turn out like we’d hoped. But as we continue to follow Him, God is always growing us in sanctification, as we “work out our salvation,” step by step. Life and change are layer upon layer, just like mixed media.

Sometimes we like the layers, perhaps even think we’re done. We’ve arrived. But another layer comes, and adds to it. Sometimes we don’t like the layers, and we cover them, just like God covers us in Jesus’ righteousness. Transformation on the canvas/page, as well as in our lives. Redeeming layers.
