Have you ever had a Bible verse that you know well—you’ve memorized it, meditated on it for decades, and then a word changes in your mind?
Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
Deut. 6:5, Matt. 22:37, Mark 12:30, Luke 10:27
I know this verse inside out. It is a key verse for my life. I taught it to all my children. Yet, as I meditated on it to make this Faith+Art journal page, my mind kept saying worship, not love.
In fact, I stamped out worship instead of love!

I’d corrected myself each time I thought it. But after I stamped it, I decided to leave it. God had to have a message in that too. 💖
The mixed media meditation I was working on was about giving God your whole heart, all the pieces of your life and self. In the inspiration video I’d watched, by Jen Alward for Encounters in Colour, she had labeled sections of her heart for things her life held—her family, her work, etc. I loved the idea of a patchwork “quilted” heart.
I considered making a fabric one, like the quilted fabric heart I made for my Valentine’s Day decor here, but decided to watercolor one instead. And add the patchwork stitching lines.
I saw those patches as something else also. Not only could each patch represent various aspects of my life, but also the stitching together represented God stitching all the broken pieces of my heart back together, making me whole again.
Something I truthfully love and worship Him with all my being for. We love Him because He first loved us. We worship Him in spirit and truth for Who He is and all that’s He’s done. He alone is worthy. Praise Him!
Because we love Him, we keep His commandments, the first and greatest to love Him with all our being.
The Make
I’m still working through a stack of started backgrounds in my stash. I think this page may have started with this pretty ink smooshing, (or one similar) almost a year ago. But then it got to a messy middle, where I’d thought I’d ruined it, so put it aside. (How many times I wish art had a “back” button. But I won’t trade my imperfect humanness for that. I’m learning to embrace it instead, and go back and—) I renewed it with stenciling, stamping, and texture paste. More layer upon layer change. Transforming the “ugly.” Beauty from ashes.

I die cut the heart and leaves. Sectioned off the heart, colored it with Distress Watercolor Pencils, then added the “stitching” with Micron marker. The leaves were cut from scraps already colored with Distress Inks. The words, stamped with individual Alphabet stamps and Archival (permanent) ink.
The Joy—in the meditation and the process. 💜
