Who is God? We can’t imagine all that our Almighty, Sovereign God encompasses. But we are well served, comforted and encouraged by praying to Him using some of the names from His characteristics that others, in the Bible, called out to Him by.
I did this project as part of the Encounters in Colour, online Christian Art Journaling Retreat, by Jenna Burnes with other additional art teachers. This lesson, to make Messy Play Prayer Cards by altering playing cards, was taught by Emily Henderson. As always, I went rogue in the art, and also had my own individual meditations.
I chose to label my cards with 7 Names of God that I pray most often.
- YHWH Tsidqenu — God our Righteousness
- Elyon — God Most High
- El Roi — God who sees me
- YHWH Shammah — God who is there
- YHWH Yireh — God my Provider
- YHWH Shalom — God my Peace
- El Shaddai — God the all sufficient one
The colorful cards are a visual reminder, that I can enjoy looking at as I pray.
I chose to make each card a different color of the rainbow with different images, but there are unifying aspects in the sheet music, the foliage stencil and color of it, the white splatters, the gauze, the font of the words, and the eyelets.
The pink and purple napkin flowers don’t show well on their painted backgrounds. I should have thought ahead, knowing how much they “melt” into the background when collaged on, but they stood out more before adhering and I didn’t think it through.
So far the backs are as is. But they could be covered with tea dyed paper, to write out a prayer.
I put the eyelets in so I could put them all together on a ring or with a ribbon.
Here’s the process. When I get time later, I’ll make more cards and get a video tutorial posted.
Layer 1: Sponge acrylic paint onto playing cards. Distress Paints in colors of the rainbow.
Layer 2: Collage sheet music, doilies, tissue paper, napkins onto the card. Variety from stash and scraps.
Layer 3: Stencil with oxide ink. Stencil: Mini, Fronds of Foliage by Dylusions. Distress Oxide Inks Bundled Sage and Rustic Wilderness.
Layer 4: Splatter with white ink. Picket Fence Distress Spray.
Layer 6: Names of God stamped with Ground Espresso Archival Ink, on Tim Holtz Ideology Labels, with alpha stamps. Recollections from Michael’s, Click Lower Case Letters.
- This process was time consuming as the letters are individual, and you can’t see where they are stamping. You can click them together, but then each letter is much further apart, and they would not have fit on my labels. I like the look of the result, but it was a labor of love, meditating on that characteristic of God as I did it. And sometimes needing more than one attempt.
Layer 5: I glued the labels on with gauze under them, for added texture.
Layer 7: Eyelet. Attached with Big Bite Cropodile. Cards pictured on a bulb pin.
I loved making this project, both the meditative process on the wonderful, amazing, characteristics of God, and all the varied aspects of the creative process. I look forward to making more, and will video the process, and post a tutorial for added help for those of you that want further guidance to make your own. I hope you were inspired and will give it a try too.
