Hide it under a basket? No! I’m gonna let it shine!
I’m still meditating on Matthew 5:14-16, (see April 26th and May 4th posts) and coming up with new ways to Bible Journal it through mixed media Faith art. Thank you to Kim Pepper’s FaithFest 2025 for inspiration. As soon as I started meditating on verse 15 in a visual way, I knew I wanted to incorporate a woven “basket” into the design of a layout.

I also knew I wanted a lamp stand of some sort. And to incorporate my beloved multi-mediums background.
The background for this page started with the warm colors of light from Distress Spray Stains in Squeezed Lemonade, Dried Marigold, and Festive Berries. Ooo, so yummy. I love it!😍

Next, I added some stenciling and stamped layers with Distress Ink and Oxides. The Nordic stencil (THMM132) in Dried Marigold. Polkadot (THMM181) in Oxide Squeezed Lemonade. And book words stamp (BoBunny “It is Written”) in Oxide Festive Berries.

Time for some die cutting. The outlined letters for ‘SHINE’ are cut from yellow and black card stock with the Tim Holtz alphanumeric Emporium die set. The yellow letters for ‘bright’ are from Tim Holtz alphanumeric Classic Lower die set.

Then, to figure out how to make a fairly tall lamp stand with flame lights. I started with the Vault Festive Wreath candle dies, using alcohol markers to color the flames. Now what can I put the candles on? Cutting down the height of the light post from Vault Christmas 2021 die set worked great.

On to the “basket”. I cut 1/4” strips from brown packing paper and wove them into a slight rectangle.

Putting the layout together. I wanted the page to look like the light from the flames was filling the page, thus the warm bright background. And wanted darkness under the basket, without light, by adding black cardstock under the basket. I shaped the basket a bit by putting foam tape under that open edge, to give it some dimension.
I typed up the verse, printed, cut it out, and edged it with the Festive Berries Distress Oxide Ink. You’ll find it also on the Free Download for this passage and series.

Since I’ve completed a page for each of the 3 verses in this passage, I think I’m done. We’ll see if God agrees, or takes my ideas further.
How would you art journal these verses? Or have you already?
