My Guiding Light

Who remembers the song My Lighthouse by Rend Collective? When I saw Natasha’s make with a lighthouse, in the Encounters in Colour Retreat, my mind immediately went to this song.

My lighthouse, my lighthouse, shining in the darkness, I will follow you.

What a great follow-up make to my Great Shepherd mixed media meditation on John 10, My sheep know My voice and follow it. They will not follow another. It’s all about following Jesus!

In my wresting and in my doubt, in my failures, you won’t walk out… In my questions your truth will hold.
Your great love will lead me through… You are the peace in my troubled sea.

In my work with DV/abuse survivors, there is a lot of wrestling, a lot of doubts, a lot of questions, a lot of seeking to find truth. When our lives are tossed about, and we don’t know which end is up, and sometimes don’t even know what truth is in our situation, the Rock Jesus stands firm and His Light shines bright and guides our way.

I won’t fear what tomorrow brings! I will trust the promise. You will lead us through the storms.

My mind, that had long departed from the art lesson presented, went to Psalm 43:3.

Send Your Light and Your Truth. Let them lead (guide) me.

Psalm 43:3

This held my thoughts!

Jesus, the Light of the World, is my constant, consistent guiding Light. He is The Truth, that is unchanging, even when I can’t make sense of the storms around me. Keeping my eyes fixed on Him, following Him, letting His Light and Truth guide me, keeps me from shipwreck in this world of chaos and confusion.

Does this verse give you hope, as you go through any storms you’re in?

As you meditate on Psalm 43:3, and perhaps listen to this song too, gather your supplies to art journal your response to God.

Use what you have. Here’s what I used:

  • Mixed media art journal, plus scrap pieces
  • Blue background coloring materials: Distress spray inks: Salty Ocean, Stormy Sky, Tumbled Glass, Worn Lipstick
  • Stencil (Ironwork) & Texture Paste (Distress, opaque)—to add dimension to the background, make “waves”
  • Water Spray bottle—add more visual texture (and help clean up)
  • White Splatters—for another layer, and Chipped Sapphire splatters and edging.
  • Lighthouse image, line drawing—Distress Paint: Lumberjack Red, Uncharted Mariner, and Tarnished Brass Distress Spray
  • Rocks stamp—Distress Ink: Frayed Burlap, Distress Oxide Ink: Pumice Stone, Ground Espresso Archival ink edging
  • Light: Dylusions paint: Lemon Zest, Pure Sunshine. and white Gesso.
  • Word and Letter stamps: Archival Ink: Prize Ribbon
