YHWH Ra’a
This isn’t the first time I’ve posted a Bible Faith Art page on our Great Shepherd. In fact, exactly 3 months ago, I posted a Bible Journaling page and YouTube video, to follow up an article I wrote on Sheep, Shepherds, and Wolves.
A year ago I journaled through Psalm 23, for my He Restores My Soul course. Another journal page on YHWH Ra’a.
So when God as Shepherd came up in an Online Faith Art Retreat on the Names of God this month, I had to think of a different way to portray this than I’d already done, and preferably different Scriptures and concepts to reflect on.
Very rarely do I use printouts in my art work, but I was out of unique ways to put this together. My mind had already decided I wanted a Shepherd and one lone sheep on this page—and since I don’t draw, and had already used my other options…
This image portrayed exactly what I wanted, including without a clear face—even though I had to do some image surgery on it.
After finishing the background the night before last, I woke up yesterday with the idea that I wanted to add numbers—counting sheep. Yes, I get random art ideas in my sleep. In my previous make I’d talked about how good shepherds know all their sheep by name. They know if one is missing; how many they have. They count sheep. It made sense to me. From there, it led to the 99 and the 1—me.
I’m a bit sad that my collaged music, The Lord’s My Shepherd, a Psalm my children and I regularly sang together, got completely covered as my background layers built up in the “messy middle.” (Here’s a modern version of this song, I listened to for this make.)
Including cardboard, gauze, and burlap added physical textures that I felt it needed, with the flat image.
The verse I chose was perfect with this image.
He protects his flock like a shepherd; he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them in the fold of his garment. He gently leads those that are nursing.
Isaiah 40:11
